“John Adams Unbound” is an exhibition of John Adams’ personal library that traces the second president’s development as lifelong book collector, reader and commentator. It also explores the significant and far-reaching impact of his library upon his life, the development of his revolutionary thoughts on government and democracy, and his larger legacy in the history of America. The featured element of the exhibition is a large, custom bookcase designed to hold the entire Adams library of 3,700 books. In addition to many large graphic panels there are dozens of Adams’s books laid open in various glass and bronze cases to display the notes, musings, and commentaries he wrote in the margins of nearly everything he read.
